Carolyn Livengood: Kings Mountain Art Fair planned for this weekend

  • The 51st annual Kings Mountain Art Fair -- one of the Top Three Fine Art Fairs in California (2014 Art Fair Sourcebook) -- will take place this Labor Day weekend at the Kings Mountain Firehouse and Community Center, 13889 Skyline Blvd., in Woodside.

The event features a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, Sunday and Monday both at the Cookshack, as well as more than 135 juried artists and 25 mountain folk artists displaying their work from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the redwood forest gallery.

A variety of drinks and food will be available for purchase. Grandma Jennie's famous giant cookies can be bought at the Cookie Booth. Harpist Aryeh Frankfurter will play softly in the background as the public enjoys the outdoor gallery.

More than 400 community members of all ages volunteer their time to the successful event each year.

The local residents began the Art Fair in 1963 as a fundraiser to create a volunteer fire company for the remote area. The first one -- held in a red barn -- showcased mostly local artists and raised $50.
