Procter & Gamble Co. (PG) raised its outlook for the year after posting stronger sales in the U.S. and finding cost savings materializing faster than expected, results that may silence some critics of Chief Executive Bob McDonald for now.
The maker of Tide laundry detergent, Gillette shaving products and Pampers diapers on Friday reported fiscal-second quarter earnings that were well ahead of the company's forecast as sales in North America, its largest and most-profitable market, are coming back faster than planned due to price cuts in some categories, such as razor blades and laundry detergents. The company said consumer and retailer responses to new products--ranging from Tide Pods, a capsule-like version of its laundry detergent, and a high-priced version of its Pantene shampoo--have been promising.
The improving sales coincide with P&G finding cost cuts that are part of a $10 billion restructuring program showing up faster than expected. Halfway through fiscal 2013, P&G has nearly already hit its goal to reduce non-manufacturing jobs by 5,700, and also now plans to lower its cost of goods by $1.4 billion this year, $200 million more than expected.
